We support children and young people who take on a caring responsibility for a family member who is ill, disabled, experiencing mental ill health or who is affected by substance misuse. Our aim is to reduce the impact of the caring role, reduce isolation, encouraging achievement of aspirations in spite of their challenges at home.
We provide specialist support groups for young carers ranging in age from 8 to 24 which directly address specific young carer issues, encourage the development of life skills, social skills and employability skills and give young people, often disadvantaged by their family situation, a head start towards achieving their aspirations.
The groups include:
- newsletter group (providing communication skills and a voice for the young carers)
- Young Carers’ Forum (providing a voice, engagement in the charity’s strategic vision as well as peer to peer support)
- Us Too – a closed group for children of parents with mental ill health (working to gain a better understanding of mental health issues, build resilience and learning to look after their own emotional well-being).
