Bosom Buddies UK was founded in 2011; its main aim is to educate 15 to 16 year old school girls about the Signs and Symptoms of Breast Cancer and How to check themselves. We go into schools and teach the girls because this is the last time you can get to 90% of the female population.

Breast Cancer caught in its early stages requires minimal surgery and costs around £2,000. If it is not caught early, often, a Mastectomy is required, plus follow-up treatments like Chemotherapy and Radiotherapy, this treatment costs in the region of £25,000. Not only is there a need for the women to detect early, to save her undergoing radical treatment, causing great distress not only to her, but those close to her, it could also help save valuable NHS funds. 1 in 8 women will get Breast Cancer in their lifetime; our mission is to make Mastectomy and Chemo a rarity, not the norm.

Knowledge is power, to give these girls the tools to look after their own wellbeing is a wonderful thing. Bosom Buddies UK talks about other significant factors like alcohol abuse, using paraben free cosmetics and healthy eating. Educating young girls and boys on the signs and symptoms of breast cancer and knowing how to check themselves could one day help save their lives.

We provide holidays to families caring for children with long term and life limiting illnesses. Our goal is to help such families spend quality time together away from their normal surroundings, in a specially adapted property in the Looe Valley in Cornwall.

Our “special place for special children” has been designed to help families with disabled children have a stress-free holiday. It is in a peaceful, secluded location and is equipped with built-in hoists, an assisted bath and other facilities, and we only charge a nominal fee for accommodation.

Our sensory studio is an Aladdin’s cave of specialised equipment aimed at helping children with special needs develop a wide range of skills.

iSightCornwall is the first centre of resource for all in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly who are affected by sight loss, whatever their age, circumstance or condition. We care passionately about helping anyone living with a visual impairment and have done ever since our foundation in 1856 when the charity supported Cornish miners.

We are ready and willing to support and encourage people with sight loss and their families to lead active, independent, and involved lives, at home, in the workplace, in their education, and by no means least, in their social lives.

Our dedicated team is ready to help everyone living with sight loss, whether recent or longstanding, sudden or gradual, for the person directly concerned and for family members, friends and colleagues who are affected by these changes too.

We will also do what we can to help people deal with the environmental, societal and financial repercussions that often ensue. We understand the complexities and life-changing nature of sight loss and the range of essential equipment available, not forgetting that sometimes even the smallest things can make a world of difference.

Penhaligon’s Friends is the only children’s bereavement charity in Cornwall and operates across the whole county. We also support children and their families when facing a terminal diagnosis.

Last year we helped over 700 bereaved children come to terms with the death of a family member or close friend. Every day in the UK around 53 children and young people are bereaved of a mother or father. Our mission is to provide a service to address the issues of grieving children through a supportive and educational environment where children, families and professionals can receive appropriate advice and information and share their experiences.

Our work is carried out in a combination of different ways; telephone support and advice, regular memory days and social events for families, monthly teenage support groups in four locations across the county, parents groups and individual support. In addition to our children’s and family services we provide high-quality training in child bereavement to an ever-widening range of professionals and volunteers.

We are only a small staff team of 6, but have over 60 volunteers across the county and were proud to have won the Queens Award for Voluntary Service in 2010, the MBE for Charity Groups. All our children’s and family services are provided free-of-charge and are on-going for as long as they are needed.

Young People Cornwall engages, inspires and supports young people across Cornwall, with youth work that makes a difference, working with them as role models and positive assets in their communities. We build strong, positive and lasting relationships with young people, community members and key organisations. We have an excellent track record of working with young people through our core work in youth centres, mobile and outreach settings.

Our outreach work in key Cornish towns reaches the most disadvantaged young people experiencing issues including family issues, homelessness, sexual exploitation, mental and sexual health, drug/alcohol issues. By building trusting relationships, youth workers encourage young people into centres and can be the gateway to additional specialist support.
