SMASH works with vulnerable and disadvantaged young people between 9 and 19 years old, to create a lasting impact, encouraging, advising and supporting them within their families, schools, peer groups and communities. The project recruits, trains and supports volunteer Memory Makers (9 to 12’s) and Mentors (13 to 19’s), who in turn work with the young people to help them feel valued and develop into healthy, happy young adults.

SMASH creates opportunities for young people to achieve their full potential in life and aims to help them to change their view of themselves. Most arrive believing themselves to be a problem that need fixing. Through our volunteers we hope to be able to change that view and to change the story they tell about themselves, into one about resilience and hope in difficult circumstances and about energetic, creative and capable young people with a future to look forward to.

The Hope Nature Centre provides work placements for Young Adults with learning disabilities (Service Volunteers). We do this by running an Animal Park and Cafe for customers to come and enjoy. Our Service Volunteers assist our staff in making sure the animals are cared for and carry out important park management tasks, as well as helping out in the busy Café, serving the local community. They absolutely love their time with us and the interaction they get with our animals and the visitors that come to our park and Cafe. The sense of inclusion that is felt by our Service Volunteers is palpable. And the sense of community felt at our centre is great. Among many achievements we have been awarded the Queens Award for Voluntary Service in 2011, and the Wiltshire Community Award for the most inclusive project.

We hope to continue to provide this amazing venue/resource for many years to come and expand and grow so that we can help more Young Adults with Learning Disabilities to enjoy the great feelings associated with a job well done, friendship and belonging to something which they can take personal pride in. If we were successful in securing the loan we would put the money towards a building extension so that we may take on more Service Volunteers and use the area for their personal development and training by hiring professional trainers to teach them skills required to enable them to enter the workplace. We would also be able to use the extension to provide extra revenue.

The John McNeill Opportunity Centre is the only specialist centre for preschool children with special needs and disabilities in south Wiltshire. We have been part of the local community for 38 years and have supported children with cerebral palsy, Down Syndrome, autism, genetic disorders communication difficulties and their families. Early intervention for the children is paramount and the specialist help we provide builds the foundation skills they need to help them reach their full potential.

We provide a language rich environment and implement methods of communication which is so important to enable the children to access education and support their social skills. The Centre is part of the local community and values the connections that have been established over the years between parents and professionals who all work together to help the children progress. We also encourage parents to meet and support each other to relieve the impact of caring for their children with special needs and disabilities.
