After being diagnosed with terminal bowel, stomach, and liver cancer, Robert was told that he had less than a year to live.

“My immediate worry when the doctor told me what was going to happen was for my family. We’ve always been a month-to-month family, and being self-employed, I was worried how we would be able to pay our bills. I’d no longer be able to work as a painter-decorator, so there was a question as to how my family would be able to afford basic things.

“My lodge Almoner and brother-in-law contacted the MCF on my behalf while I was in hospital. Just a few days later, a grant was paid into my bank account to cover two months of mortgage payments – this bridged the gap until my life insurance paid out.

“The MCF also provides termly grants to support my two step-daughters, as well as my ex-wife and daughter who is currently studying at university. In a way, I suppose the MCF are just taking over from me in supporting my family.

The grants we have received have lifted a huge weight and eased a huge burden from my shoulders. It’s reassuring to know that whatever happens to me, support for all three girls will continue for as long as they are in education.

Sadly, Robert passed away.
We will continue to support his family for as long as they need us
