Glenn, a proud resident of Portsmouth, faced significant challenges after suffering severe health issues.  Following a routine hip replacement, Glenn developed serious complications including a collapsed lung, pneumonia, pleurisy, and cold sepsis, leading to him being placed in an induced coma for 15 days. Upon awakening, he found himself severely debilitated, initially only able to move his hands and parts of his left arm. The nerve damage and resultant neuropathy significantly impaired his mobility and independence.

Glenn has had a been a Freemason since 2000, having been initiated into Excelsior Lodge in Hampshire and later joining Prudence Lodge. During time in Freemasonry, he had the honour of guiding his two sons through their initiations and became an active member of his Lodge, serving as Worshipful Master for three consecutive years during the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite his physical challenges, he remains committed to Prudence Lodge and found the delivery of the First-Degree tools ritual, a deeply rewarding experience.

Glenn discovered the Masonic Charitable Foundation (MCF, the Freemasons’ charity) through the friendships he had made within his Lodge. As his condition worsened, Glenn contacted the MCF to seek assistance for private medical consultations following guidance from his Provincial Grand Almoner, Pat McCaw.

The support provided by the MCF has been life-changing for Glenn. He was awarded a minor grant enabling consultations at a local hospital, potentially leading to further, more significant support depending on the results. The MCF also funded a collapsible electric wheelchair which dramatically enhanced Glen’s independence and day-to-day mobility.

“The wheelchair has given me independence,” said Glenn, adding that the lightweight model provided by the meant his wife could manage with its transportation.

Glenn describes the application process for the MCF’s support as straightforward and empathetic. He felt treated with dignity and respect throughout the means-tested process, appreciating the fairness and compassion shown.

Currently, Glenn is continuing intensive rehabilitation efforts. His physical challenges remain considerable, yet his determination is unwavering.  On a practical level, the MCF’s support has profoundly enhanced his quality of life, restoring a significant degree of independence. Emotionally, Glen believed that the help he received has renewed a sense of hope and confidence, positively affecting his mental wellbeing as he works towards recovery.

Glenn maintains a positive outlook and has seen his mobility improve on a day-to-day basis, boosted by the companionship of his new dog, Teddy, who keeps him company whilst his wife is at work.  He continues to be an active Freemason and is looking to join a new Lodge, with the aim of helping new members become engaged in Freemasonry.

Moreover, in a big step, Glenn and his family will be heading on holiday to Türkiye in the summer – his first holiday since his health and mobility issues arose.

“I never thought that I would get this sense of normality back. It will be a new experience travelling with my wheelchair, but I’m looking forward to it,” said Glenn.

Glenn’s experience illustrates how the MCF’s support can profoundly improve a person’s recovery from illness, both practically and emotionally.  For others who find themselves in challenging situations, Glenn offers clear advice: do not hesitate to reach out to the MCF. He stresses the importance of seeking support early, emphasising that “there is no shame in accepting help during difficult times”.
