John’s story
When John and his wife lost everything – their income, private pensions, and savings – their life changed overnight.
After falling victim to fraud and losing everything, John’s mental health took a significant toll; “We were literally broke. I attempted suicide and spent several weeks in hospital leaving my wife to deal with the resultant financial mess.”
Once they returned home, their financial worries quickly returned as they were trying to survive on modest state pensions, with John’s wife receiving only a small pension after giving up her NHS career decades earlier to care for their son.
To make matters worse, John had lost touch with his Lodge and became very isolated. But, luckily, through his two sons – both active Freemasons – and a trusted old friend, John was introduced to the Masonic Charitable Foundation (MCF, the Freemasons’ Charity).
That connection changed everything.
Caroline, an MCF advisor, visited John and his wife in their new rented home. They had no idea that they would be entitled to receive benefits, but with Caroline’s knowledge and persistence to navigate the system properly, she helped the couple successfully access Attendance Allowance, Pension Credit, an increase in Housing Benefit, as well as reductions in Council Tax. These essential benefits transformed their situation, giving them stability and dignity at a time when they had lost hope.
Today, John and his wife live a simple but comfortable life within their new circumstances. Most importantly, they no longer face the future with fear.
Caroline knew exactly what to do and how to complete the forms. Without her, none of this would have been possible. I cannot speak highly enough about our experience with Caroline specifically and the MCF generally.
For John and his family, the guidance provided by the Advice and Support Team (AST) was more than a source of financial help, it was a lifeline that restored security, independence, and hope.
