Advice & Support Team
Impact

After Kim’s partner of 45 years died, she was left in a difficult financial situation and became the sole carer for her stepson – who sadly passed away just three months later.
“It was such a hard time, and on top of everything, my house was deteriorating. At this point I was claiming some state benefits, but then I was told by someone that I might also be able to receive support from the MCF, so I got in touch.” – Kim.
Kim was put in contact with Kath, an MCF Adviser who is a member of the Advice and Support Team (AST). The team offers a free and confidential service for Freemasons and their families. The Advisers work regionally across England and Wales offering face-to-face or telephone advice and support on a wide range of issues, this includes helping people to access state and local authority benefits.
My ex-partner didn’t treat me well; he was a bully. I blame myself for a lot of things and I find it hard to trust people, but I got to know Kath quite well, and it took a while, but I really trust her. She phones to check in on me and tells me that it’s not my fault. She’s just a nice person, and if it wasn’t for her, I wouldn’t be here right now. She helped me in claiming my pension, and she also advised me to apply for a disability benefit. When I read the forms that came through for Attendance Allowance there were so many, and I thought I wouldn’t be entitled to them. But Kath said, “we might as well try”, so we filled out the application together, and I later found out that my application was accepted.
On top of the support provided to Kim from the AST, she also receives grants from the MCF to help cover her immediate living expenses.
“I’m thankful for the support. I still have good and bad days, but the support has helped me financially, and with my mental health too. I used to avoid going out and seeing people because I would have panic attacks, but now I have a little puppy so she gets me out and about a bit more, and if I do want to chat to people, I can.” – Kim
