Freemasons from across Cumbria recently took part in a memorable fundraising event by abseiling down the historic Freemasons’ Hall in central London in support of their 2027 Festival.
The event brought together members from the Province of Cumberland and Westmorland, united by a shared commitment to charitable giving. Leading the way was John Fielding, Assistant Grand Master of Cumberland and Westmorland Freemasons, who was the first to take on the challenge. He was soon joined by the Provincial Grand Master of Cumberland and Westmorland Freemasons, Nick Wilson, as well as fellow Freemasons and supporters.
This unique event also saw several family members, including the wives of Freemasons, take part, highlighting the inclusive and community-driven nature of the occasion.
Even a Teddies for Loving Care (TLC) teddy bear made the descent, kicking off this year’s four millionth teddy celebration with #HeroTeddy.

Neil Dixon, spokesperson for Cumbria Freemasons, reflected on the spirit of the day: “The abseil was a real test of nerve, but every step down that wall reminded us why we were here, to make a difference. It was inspiring to see so many members, families, and even our mascot bear come together for such an important cause.”
The event combined personal achievement with collective purpose, demonstrating the enduring values of Freemasonry: charity, unity, and service.
The abseil also marked another step forward in the Province’s ongoing efforts to reach its 2027 Festival fundraising goal. Donations to support the abseilers can still be made via the official fundraising page:
