andy training for marathon

The London Marathon returns this April, and we are incredibly proud of the dedicated fundraisers taking on the iconic 26.2 mile course in aid of the Masonic Charitable Foundation (MCF, the Freemasons’ charity). Among them is Andy Nicholson, a Freemason from Staffordshire (John O’Gaunt Lodge 4054 in Newcastle-Under-Lyme, Staffordshire), whose path to the London Marathon is a story of incredible personal transformation.

Over the past five years, he has achieved a remarkable transformation, shedding an impressive eight stone through sustained commitment and lifestyle change. Once a self-proclaimed “anti‑runner” who avoided the sport at all costs, Andy entered the new year with a renewed sense of purpose. Determined to push his limits, he began training seriously, building consistency week by week. To gauge his progress and challenge himself further, he even put his growing fitness to the test at a HYROX event in Birmingham – an indicator of just how far he has come from the days when running felt unimaginable.

For Andy, Freemasonry is a family tradition. A member since the age of 21, he followed in his father’s (Onward Lodge 5540 in Fleetwood, Lancashire) footsteps and eventually served as Worshipful Master in 2016. However, his bond with the MCF goes beyond his membership; it’s rooted in a time of crisis.

When Andy’s father suffered a stroke, the family faced a daunting challenge. Their home required urgent adaptations to assist his father’s return to health and we were able to support the family during this time.

By stepping in with urgent short‑term assistance, the MCF provided the Nicholson family with the stability and peace of mind they desperately needed at a difficult time. That support not only helped them regain their footing but also strengthened Andy’s heartfelt desire to give back to what he proudly calls “our charity.”

When asked what advice he would give to others considering a similar fundraising challenge, Andy is clear: “Back yourself and do it. I never thought I’d be a runner, but once you start, you truly understand the enjoyment and the sense of achievement.”

Every mile Andy runs will help the MCF continue its vital work, supporting communities and individuals across England, Wales, and the Channel Islands when they need it most. His dedication fuels our ability to offer life-changing assistance, and we are immensely grateful, not only to Andy, but to all our fundraisers for their tireless efforts. Their generosity and spirit make our mission possible.
